Origin

Early 19th century; earliest use found in John Thomson (1765–1846), physician and surgeon. Reduplication of one, chiefly via Caribbean creole after distributive use in a number of African languages, e.g. Akan baako-baako, Bemba u-mo u-mo, Yoruba ọ̀koọ̀kan.
