The inguinal ligament, formed by the inferior edge of the aponeurosis of the external oblique muscle, which extends from the anterior superior spine of the ilium to the pubic tubercle.
Origin
Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Alexander Monro (1697–1767), surgeon and anatomist. From the genitive of the name of François Poupart, French surgeon, who described the ligament (F. Poupart Chirurgie complète) + ligament, after scientific Latin ligamentum Poupartii.
