Treated as plural. In Russian (especially Siberian) cuisine: small (traditionally crescent-shaped) pasta cases, stuffed with seasoned meat (or occasionally fish or vegetables), boiled in water and usually served in a sauce.
Origin
1920s; earliest use found in Blackwood's Magazine. From Russian pel′meni, plural of pel′men′, probably from Komi pel'ńań or Udmurt pel'ńań from pel' ear + ńań bread; further etymology unknown.
