Probably from Irish regional (chiefly Aran) pampúta, probably from Dutch pampoesje indoor slipper (perhaps altered after -tje, diminutive suffix; compare German regional (Low German) Pampuschen, plural) or its etymon Javanese †pampus from early modern Persian pāpōš Compare babouche.
