Middle English (as a noun): probably from Old Norse skáld 'skald'.

  • This is probably from Old Norse skáld ‘poet’; there may have been an intermediate sense ‘lampooner’. In early use in English the word often referred to a woman using ribald language; and the verb had gained the sense ‘chide’ by the early 18th century.
