Early 17th century; earliest use found in Henry Wotton (1568–1639), diplomat and writer. From classical Latin pinacothēca art gallery (Varro, Vitruvius) from Hellenistic Greek πινακοθήκη (Strabo) from ancient Greek πινακο-, combining form of πίναξ, πινακ- + θήκη repository.
