Attributive Designating or relating to (a figure illustrating) an optical illusion in which the two ends of a straight line whose central portion is obscured by a rectangular strip crossing at an angle seem not to be in line; especially in Poggendorff figure, Poggendorff illusion.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Psychological Review. From the name of J. C. Poggendorff, German physicist and chemist. Poggendorff described this illusion in Ann. der Physik u. Chemical 110 502.
