A North American warbler, Dendroica magnolia (family Parulidae), the male of which is blackish with yellow underparts and rump.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Spencer Baird (1823–1887), zoologist and scientific administrator. From scientific Latin Magnolia, genus name, adopted (in the binomial Sylvia magnolia) as a specific name by A. Wilson, with reference to the bird's supposed habitat + warbler.
