- a play by the US writer Eugene O'Neill, written between 1939 and 1941. It was first performed in 1956 after O'Neill died, and won the Pulitzer Prize. It is a sad story about the Tyrone family, based on O'Neill's own family. James Tyrone is a cruel father, his wife Mary takes drugs, one son Edmund has tuberculosis (= a disease of the lungs) and the other son Jamie is dependent on alcohol.
