- (1671-1734) the popular name for Robert MacGregor, a Scottish Jacobite outlaw (= a person who has broken the law and who must hide to avoid being caught). After his land and property were taken by the English, he lived by stealing cows and forcing people to pay him money for protection. He is the main character in Sir Walter Scott's romantic novel Rob Roy (1817).
