the Bull Ring
/ðə ˈbʊl rɪŋ/
/ðə ˈbʊl rɪŋ/
- a large shopping centre in Birmingham, England. It was first built in the 1960s on an old market where bulls (= male cows) used to be sold. For some people it represents a mistake of 20th-century architecture, destroying historical areas and replacing them with buildings that have no interesting features or beauty. It was itself replaced by a new shopping centre in 2003.
