  1. one of the largest groups of British supermarkets, part of J Sainsbury plc. The first Sainsbury's was a small shop in London, opened in 1869 by John James Sainsbury (1844-1928) and Mary Ann Sainsbury (1849-1927). In 1950 its shop in Croydon, south London was the first to become self-service. Since then many more supermarkets have opened all over Britain. The Sainsbury family are also known for supporting the arts and charities in Britain and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts near Norwich has an important collection of art given by the family.
