/ˌkeɪsi ət ðə ˈbæt/
- a popular US poem (1888) by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, about a great baseball player who fails. Casey has a chance to win the game but he strikes out (= fails to hit the ball three times and is dismissed). The poem ends: “And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout; But there is no joy in Mudville – Mighty Casey has struck out.”
