Fish were Earth's first vertebrates when they appeared more than half a billion years ago, but they were primitive and jawless, with sucker-like mouths.

While the primeval oceans were teeming with life including jawless fish, arthropods, squid relatives, jellyfish and more, the land was barren and void.

The jawless, gray fish are a traditional food source for tribal members in the Columbia River Basin.
