In January 2015, oceanographers aboard the Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis were cruising off the coast of Antarctica when they were presented with a unique opportunity.

It is known as aurora borealis, or the northern lights, in the northern hemisphere and aurora australis, or the southern lights, in the southern hemisphere.

The Aurora Australis had broken free of its mooring lines on Wednesday following a severe blizzard.
