American mammal (Myrmecophaga jubata) of the order Edentata that is about four feet in length exclusive of the long tail, has long shaggy gray fur with a black breast band and white stripe on the shoulder, and is toothless but has a long slender tongue with which it licks up ants and powerful claws with which it tears up logs and anthills — called also great anteater, tamanoir; see anteater 2. : aardvark |
