[ad. L. affricātus, pa. pple. of affricāre, f. ad to + fricāre to rub.]
A close combination of an explosive consonant or ‘stop’ with an immediately following fricative or spirant of corresponding position, as in Ger. pf, z (= ts). Also called aˈffricative.
