[Of obscure origin; there was an Irish gainne of similar meaning. Du Cange s.v. Ganeo quotes an undated gloss ‘ganeo..hasta vel jaculum, lingua Gallica’, but the word is not known in OFr.
A supposed 14th c. example often cited (from Alisaunder 292) is prob. a mistake; the gamus of the MS. should prob. be corrected into gairus, not into gainus.]
An arrow, or similar missile, esp. a crossbow-bolt. In late use chiefly in the alliterative phrase gun and ganyie.
