A form of obsession in which even the simplest facts are compulsively queried.
1876Mind I. 413 Under the name Grübelsucht, Griesinger..described three examples of a peculiar mental condition, characterised by continuous uncontrollable questionings as to the origin and causes of things great and small. 1885W. James in Mind X. 37 It would practically be a case of Grübelsucht, if a ruffian were assaulting and drubbing my body, to spend much time in subtle speculation. 1909W. F. Robertson tr. Tanzi's Textbk. Mental Dis. v. 150 Some cannot cease from putting to themselves metaphysical and insoluble problems. This constitutes interrogative obsession, the obsession of the why, or Grübelsucht. |
