red-backed, a. a. Having a red back; chiefly of birds, esp. the red-backed butcher-bird or shrike (Lanius collurio), and the red-backed sandpiper (Erolia alpina). Also, the red-backed mouse or vole (Clethrionomys gapperi), and the Australian red-backed spider (= red-back 2).
