Holbein|ˈhəʊlbaɪn, ˈhɒl-| The name of the German painter Hans Holbein (1497–1543), used attrib. to designate embroidery, rugs, etc., embodying qualities or decoration characteristic of Holbein or his work. Hence Holbeiˈnesque a. [see -esque], resembling the work of Holbein.
