2. Dyeing. A green aniline dye (see quots.).
1875Ure's Dict. Arts (ed. 7) I. 720 Viridine. A green dye has been obtained..by acting on rosolic acid with aniline and benzoic acid. 1882Nature XXV. 546 R. Meldola..investigates the action of benzyl chloride upon diphenylamine, and the action of oxidising agents upon the product. The substance thus produced is a green dye, ‘viridin’.
