The name of James Weddell (1787–1834), Scottish navigator, used attrib. or in the possessive as Weddell('s) seal, to designate a large brown Antarctic seal, Leptonychotes weddellii, first recorded by him and named in his honour in 1826. Cf. sea-leopard s.v. sea n. 23 b. Also absol.
