= Irish deer, elk (Irish a. 2 b).
1774T. West Antiquities Furness p. xlvi, That the legh was a native of Furness, is evident from the heads of those animals frequently found in Furness. 1795A. Radcliffe Journey 483 A remarkably large breed of deer, called Leghs, the heads of which have frequently been found buried at a considerable depth in the soil. 1835Wordsworth Guide through District of Lakes (ed. 5) ii. 38 The leigh, a gigantic species of deer which has long been extinct. 1974J. W. Smyser in Wordsworth Prose Works III. 403 Wordsworth drew on West for his information about the ‘leigh’.
