‖ liˈthanthrax Obs. Also 7 lithanthrix, 8 lithonthrax. [Mod.L., f. Gr. λίθ-ος stone + ἄνθραξ charcoal.] Used as a scientific name for mineral coal (i.e. ‘coal’ in the mod. sense), in distinction from xylanthrax (charcoal).
