annulospiral, a. Zool.|ˌænjuːləʊˈspaɪrəl| [ad. It. anulo-spirale (coined by A. Ruffini 1896, in Monitore Zool. Ital. VII. 50): see annular a., spiral a. (and adv.).] Designating a type of sensory nerve ending that winds spirally around muscle fibres in a muscle spindle.
1898Jrnl. Physiol. XXIII. 199 The difference between these two modes of ending..consists in the former presenting a perfect spiral... In the latter mode of ending there are a succession of rings... But there exist forms intermediate between these two endings... I judged it well therefore to speak of the two together under the single term—annulo-spiral ending. 1948Q. Jrnl. Microsc. Sci. LXXXIX. 172 To distinguish between the two types of sensory ending present in muscle-spindles the terms ‘annulo-spiral’ and ‘flower-spray’ are commonly used. 1961Lancet 9 Sept. 583/2 The sudan technique..clearly shows the annulospiral sensory endings of normal muscle spindles. 1974D. & M. Webster Compar. Vertebr. Morphol. x. 201 The annulospiral endings have a larger diameter and transmit impulses more rapidly. |
