Melba|ˈmɛlbə| The stage name Nellie Melba (adopted from Melbourne, Australia, by Helen Mitchell (1861–1931), an Australian operatic soprano): used to designate certain foods, etc., named in her honour, as peach Melba (also melba, pêche à la Melba, pêche Melba |pɛʃ ˈmɛlbə|), a confection of ice-cream and peaches flavoured with raspberry sauce, etc.; Melba sauce (see quot. 1951); Melba toast (or toast Melba), thinly-sliced bread toasted to crispness.
