Moinian, a. Geol.|ˈmɔɪnɪən| [f. Moine + -ian.] Of, pertaining to, or designating the Moine series of rocks (see Moine). Also absol., the Moine series.
1938A. K. Wells Outl. Hist. Geol. vi. 50 There is nothing inherently impossible in the suggestion that the Moinian rocks may be metamorphosed Torridonian. Ibid., It is as well to remind ourselves that the great overthrusts separate an area where the succession is Lower Palæozoic rocks, on Torridonian, on Lewisian, from one..in which the succession is: Dalradian, on Moinian, on Lewisian. 1954Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. CX. 46 Many bodies of Lewisian gneiss are marked on the Geological Survey maps of the Moine area of Ross-shire. Preliminary studies..suggest that some at least of these bodies resemble the so-called inliers of Scardroy and Fannich in being of Moinian age. 1969Bennison & Wright Geol. Hist. Brit. Isles iii. 46 The Lewisian also forms the basement to the Moinian Series, a dominantly arenaceous sedimentary sequence but everywhere separated from the Torridonian by the Moine thrust. 1971Geol. Mag. CVIII. 193 Moinian and Dalradian metamorphic rocks occur in the north-east extension of the Ox Mountains [in Eire]. The petrology and migmatization of the Moinian are discussed and Dalradian rocks are described for the first time from this area. |
