The name of the Italian physician and educationalist, Dr. Maria Montessori (1870–1952), used to designate her educational system or ideas for the individual development of young children through free but guided play with apparatus designed specially to encourage sense perception and mental interest; also ellipt. Hence Monteˈssorian a. and n., Monteˈssorianism.
