A kind of television camera tube similar to the iconoscope but having a transparent target plate, so that the scanning beam can be made to strike normally the opposite side to that on which the image is projected, and employing low-speed electrons for the beam, resulting in increased sensitivity and an absence of the spurious signals associated with the iconoscope. See also image orthicon (image n. 8).
The term was registered in the U.S.A. as a proprietary name in 1940, but it is now a generic term in the public domain.
