penton Biol.|ˈpɛntɒn| [f. penta- + -on1 2.] A capsomere which occupies any of the twelve vertices of the icosahedral capsid of an adenovirus.
1966H. S. Ginsberg et al. in Virology XXVIII. 782/2 The unit at the twelve corners of the icosahedron should then be termed a penton because each has 5 neighbouring units (hexons). The penton corresponds to the B or cell-detaching antigen; thus the soluble antigen should be called the penton antigen. 1970Nature 17 Jan. 226/2 Adenovirus has a more complex capsid containing 240 hexons and twelve pentons each with a molecular weight of about 400,000. 1972Ibid. 14 Apr. 348/1 The DNA-specific endonuclease associated with the penton bases of the virion may affect the host genome in an apparently random manner. |
