[ad. L. phasma, a. Gr. ϕάσµα spectre, apparition, phantom, f. ϕάω I shine, give light, or ϕαίν-ειν to show, pass. to appear. At first in Gr.-L. form phasma, pl. phasmata.]
†1. An extraordinary appearance, esp. of brilliant light in the air; a meteor. Obs.
1635Swan Spec. M. v. §2 (1643) 82 Fierie [Meteors]..such as onely seem to burn, which are therefore called Phasmata. 1656Stanley Hist. Philos. vi.
