phosphuretted hydrogen = phosphine, phosphorus trihydride, PH3, a poisonous gas of disgusting smell, produced by the decomposition of animal substances. When arising from water, it contains traces of the vapour of a liquid hydride, and is then spontaneously inflammable, giving rise (it is believed) to the phenomenon known as ignis fatuus or will o' the wisp.
