1911O. M. Dalton Byzantine Art & Archaeol. xii. 674 The orans type holding the Christ-medallion over the breast..is sometimes described as Blacherniotissa, while that in which the Virgin stands and the medallion is unsupported is known as Platytera.1943C. de Tolnay Michelangelo I. 158 The idea of placing the Christ Child between the knees of His mother is exceptional. Michelangelo seems to approach in this, as well as in the severe vertical axis of the position, an artistic conception of the Middle Ages—the Platytera, or Virgin who carries the Child in her bosom. In the ordinary Platytera type the Child is surrounded by a mandorla... We may note the seated Platytera which occurs in the Etchmiadzin Gospels.1944Burlington Mag. July 176/1 Its form is derived from the ‘platytera’, showing the child as an abstract symbol affixed to but not inside the body of the mother... The ‘platytera’ proper appears in Byzantine art as early as the fifth or sixth century..and in many adapted forms spreads over Europe during the Middle Ages.1963von Herzfeld & Rice tr. Onasch's Icons 345/2 This older type shows the Virgin [sc. as orans] without a medallion before her, the later type represents her with it. This later type is called in Greek ‘Platytera’, the Ample One, with reference to a hymn: ‘He made your womb more ample than the heavens’. In Russian icon painting it is called the ‘Virgin of the Sign’ (Znamenie).
