resveratrol, n. Brit. |rɪzˈvɛrətrɒl|, U.S. |rəzˈvɛrəˌtrɑl|, |rɪzˈvɛrəˌtrɑl| Forms: 19– resveratrol, 19– reservatrol[irreg.] [‹ res- (in resinous adj.) + veratr- (in scientific Latin Veratrum, genus name of the plant from which it was first obtained (see veratrum n.)) + -ol suffix.] A polyphenol found in various plants and in red wine, which has antioxidant and antifungal properties and has been investigated for possible anticarcinogenic effects; 3,4′,5-trihydroxystilbene, (HO)2H3C6{b1}(CH)2{b1}C6H4(OH).
