ponerid, a. (n.) Zool.|pəʊˈnɛrɪd| [f. mod.L. Ponēra (Latreille 1804), generic name (a. Gr. πονηρά, fem. of πονηρός wicked) + -id3.] Of or pertaining to the Ponēridæ, a family of tropical ants. n. An ant of this family. So poneroid |pəʊˈnɪərɔɪd| a., related in form to the Poneridæ. Cf. next.
