pregnenolone Biochem. and Med.|prɛgˈniːnələʊn| [ad. G. pregnenolon (Butenandt & Westphal 1934, in Ber. d. Deut. Chem. Ges. LXVII. 2085), f. pregn-an pregnane + -en -ene + -ol -ol + -on -one.] A synthetic steroid, C21H32O2, which is a reduced derivative of progesterone and was formerly used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
