1677Moxon Mech. Exerc. (1703) 157 Instead of asking how much was cut off such a piece of Stuff, Carpenters ask what Batement that piece of Stuff had.
b. batement light [light n. 10], an upper window or opening with a sloping or curved sill, i.e. abated or cut off at the low end to accommodate the curve of an arch, etc.
