pumpellyite Min.|pʌmˈpɛlɪaɪt| [f. the name of Raphael Pumpelly (1837–1923), U.S. geologist: see -ite1.] An iron- and magnesium-bearing hydrous calcium aluminosilicate, crystallographically similar to minerals of the epidote group, which occurs as colourless, greenish, or brown monoclinic crystals and is characteristic of certain low-grade metamorphic rocks.
1925Palache & Vassar in Amer. Mineralogist X. 412 For this mineral we propose the name of Pumpellyite for Raphael Pumpelly, the pioneer student of the detailed paragenesis of the minerals of this region. 1959W. W. Moorhouse Study of Rocks in Thin Section vi. 170 The vesicles of basalts are filled with secondary minerals, of which the most typical are zeolites, carbonate, the silica minerals.., feldspar, epidote, pumpellyite, chlorite, and serpentinite. 1975Lithos VIII. 72 The textures and crystal forms strongly suggest that the pumpellyite-quartz aggregates are reaction products which developed after equilibrium crystallization of the prehnite and chlorite. 1978Nature 20 July 242/1 Prehnite and pumpellyite have been found in County Cavan, Ireland. |
