‖ sfumato, a. (n.) Painting.|sfuˈmato| [It., lit. ‘smoked’.] (See quot. 1869.) Also as n., the technique of softening outlines and allowing tones and colours to shade gradually into one another; a softened outline or hazy form produced in this way.
