clafoutis, n. Brit. |klaˈfuːti|, U.S. |kləˈfudi| Plural unchanged Forms: 19– clafouti, 19– clafoutis [‹ French clafoutis, clafouti (1866; 1864 in French regional (central) sources), of uncertain origin. It has been suggested that the French word might be a blend of French regional (central) clafir, claufir to cover a surface, to fill up, to stuff (compare Occitan clafir,claufir, to stuff, to fill up (1906 or earlier), Old French claufir to attach with nails (10th cent.); > n.) + fīgere: see fix v.) and a noun derivative (compare -ise suffix2) of foutre, verb (see foutre n.): see further Französisches Etymol. Wörterbuch s.v. clavo fīgere.] A type of dessert consisting of fruit, typically cherries, baked in a sweet, custard-like batter.
