sinningia|sɪˈnɪŋgɪə| [mod.L. (C. G. Nees von Esenbeck 1825, in Ann. Sci. Nat. VI. 296), f. the name of Wilhelm Sinning (1794–1874), German botanist + -ia1.] A hairy herbaceous plant of the genus so called, belonging to the family Gesneriaceæ, native to Brazil, and bearing bell-shaped flowers. Sinningia speciosa is the parent of many varieties commonly known as gloxinias.
