‖ contrapas|kɒntrəˈpɑːs| [Sp. contrapás, f. Cat. contrapàs, f. contra- + pas.] A Catalan dance, originally performed at religious ceremonies, in which the dancers form a chain and dance in a semi-circle.
1898G. Vuillier Hist. Dancing vii. 227 The Contrapas is a purely Catalan dance, in which women rarely take part. The dancers join hands and move round in a circle. It is, in fact, a sort of Round, led by two principal performers, who give the time and the step. 1964W. G. Raffé Dict. Dance 122/1 Contrapas (Catalonia, Spain), a solemn religious dance which used to be performed after Mass outside the church. |
