cyclopentadienyl, n. Chem. Brit. |ˌsʌɪkləʊpɛntəˈdʌɪənʌɪl|, |ˌsʌɪkləʊˌpɛntəˈdʌɪənɪl|, U.S. |ˌsaɪkloʊˌpɛn(t)əˈdaɪən(ə)l| [‹ cyclopentadiene n. + -yl suffix.] A planar cyclic anion, C5H5-, derived from cyclopentadiene, which has aromatic character and forms complexes with metal atoms, most notably sandwich compounds in which a metal atom is bonded between two parallel cyclopentadienyl rings. Abbreviated Cp.
1918Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. 40 1708 The especial interest in the free radical, cyclopentadienyl, if it can be obtained, would be its comparatively low molecular weight. 1958Proc. Royal Soc. (A.) 246495 The main efforts of the scientists have since been directed..to the synthesis of compounds of cyclopentadienyl with an ever-increasing number of different metals. 1985A. Streitweiser & C. H. Heathcock Introd. Org. Chem. (ed. 3) xiii. 629 There are a few compounds known having only one cyclopentadienyl ring per metal atom... In addition..there is a considerably larger number..containing a single ring and additional ligands such as carbon monoxide. 1996M. J. Winter d-Block Chem. (1998) ii. 16 Perhaps the most famous cyclopentadienyl complex is [Fe(η5-C5H5)2], otherwise known as ferrocene. |
