Etymology: < Celt n.1 + -ish suffix1. Perhaps compare Dutch keltisch (1605 as celtisch , or earlier), German keltisch (1548 as celtisch , or earlier), both ‘Celtic’ (in various senses of the adjective), both earliest with reference to the ancient Celtic peoples. Compare earlier Celtic adj. Compare also earlier Gothish adj.
Celtic (in various senses of Celtic adj.). Now also: somewhat Celtic in style or character.
