al Qaedan.

Brit. /al ˈkʌɪdə/, /əl kɑːˈɪdə/, U.S. /ˌæl ˈkaɪdə/, /əl kɑˈɪdə/

Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic al-qāʿida.
Etymology: < Arabic al-qāʿida, literally ‘the base’ ( < al the + qāʿida base, foundation, basis, principle, also (specifically) military base), short for al-qāʿida al-ṣulba, literally ‘the firm base’ (1988).Osama bin Laden claimed in an interview in October 2001 that the organization's name originated in the 1980s as the name of a training camp for mujahidin fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan. However, bin Laden did not invent the name. Rather, he borrowed it from al-qāʿida al-ṣulba, the title of a paper published by his mentor ʿAbd Allāh Yūsuf al-ʿAzzām (1941–89), Palestinian Muslim activist, in the April 1988 issue of the periodical al-Jihād. An apparent earlier use of the Arabic term as the name of a radical newspaper in Iraq in the 1950s is unconnected.
A network of militant Islamic groups active internationally since the 1990s, and under the leadership of founding member Osama bin Laden (1957–2011) associated with numerous attacks on military and civilian targets across the world, most prominently those against the World Trade Centre in New York on 11 September 2001 Frequently attributive, as al Qaeda cell, al Qaeda link, al Qaeda terrorist, etc.Originally founded in the late 1980s to fund resistance to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, al Qaeda later declared its aim to establish a unified Muslim state and to eradicate non-Islamic influence in the Muslim world. It was designated a terrorist organization by the American State Department in 1999, and by the United Nations Security Council in 2001.
