Etymology: < the name of Thomas Chippendale (1718–79), a celebrated English cabinetmaker and furniture designer, who published his influential book of designs The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director in 1754.In sense A. 2 apparently originally with allusion to the frequent use of similar armorial devices in Chippendale's furniture designs.
