Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: clap n.1, skate n.2
Etymology: < clap n.1 + skate n.2, after Dutch klapschaats ( < Dutch klap clap n.1 + schaats skate n.2) with reference to the noise made by the skate when the blade snaps back into place.
In speed-skating: a type of ice skate designed for increased speed, consisting of a boot which lifts from the blade at the heel (affording the blade a longer time in contact with the ice) before snapping back into place.

1998 Time 16 Feb. 87/1 Unlike the conventional skate heel, the heel of the clap skate's boot detaches from the blade like a one-way seesaw. The skater's heel lifts off the blade, lengthening the blade's contact time on the ice, then the blade snaps back to its original position with a noisy ‘clap’.
