A word taken over from the Vulgate [representing Greek σκνίϕες, plural, of σκνίψ, of the Septuagint.] , where it is applied to the insects which constituted the third plague of Egypt (Exodus viii. 17); variously supposed to be gnats, lice, fleas. Also occasionally in singular.Bailey has ‘ciniphes’.
