In sense 2 after post-classical Latin ciniflo (1671 in the passage translated in quot. 1720; compare classical Latin cinifl̄̄ō heater of curling tongs, hairdresser); compare also in similar use German Kohlen-bläser (1713), Swedish kolpysare (1749), kolpustare (1769), kolblåsare (1772), early modern Danish, Danish kulpuster.
1. A person who stirs up or encourages conflict; a troublemaker, an agitator. Cf. blow-coal n. at blow- comb. form 3, to blow the coals at coal n. Phrases 3a. Now rare.
